Welcome to week seven, the penultimate week in the Warhammer Online play logs. I'll spare you the segue this week and just jump right in to the most meaty topic about the game: player-versus-player combat. Though there may be a hearty portion of player-versus-environment content in Warhammer, it's merely a side dish for this main course. PVP in Warhammer takes the form of realm-versus-realm combat, or RVR. Every single action that one player takes against another in the game contributes to an on-going war between Order players and Destruction players. There are few areas of the game that are in stasis: the battlefield is ever-changing, and winning key points on certain maps and claiming zones greatly changes the way that the game is played for members of either side. The RVR experience is broken up into two different parts: instanced-based, scenario PVP and world PVP. Both parts contribute to the overall war between the two factions, but do so in different ways as scenario PVP contributes more to the building up of forces on one side or another while world PVP determines who controls what in the world. Scenario PVP will be familiar to anyone who has played WoW. Essentially, players can choose to queue up for a battleground which is an instanced encounter separate from the main game world. In these scenarios, players are divided into two teams according to their faction, an objective is laid out, and then a timer begins. The first team to hit the point cap, or the team winning when time runs out, is declared the winner of the scenario, and every member of that team is awarded bonus experience and money in addition to that which is awarded based on performance, which measured by number of kills, amount of damage healed, and so on.
Mythic Entertainment's Chief Technology Officer Matt Shaw is slated to keynote the America's Video Game Expo (VGXPO) and its East Coast Games Summit. VGXPO will take place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, from November 21-23.
In a session titled "MMOs, Everyone Wants to Do One!", Shaw will discuss the differences in developing single player games versus MMO titles, and the lessons learned along the way. Some highlights of the upcoming East Coast Games Summit at VGXPO include:
"Pitch Your Game Idea": a session for entrepreneurs to pitch their game concepts to industry leaders.
"Scrum Deconstructed": a hands-on workshop for game industry management and technologists.
"Breaking In": a conference for students and others interested in making a career out of games.
Speakers from companies like Acclaim Entertainment, Electronic Arts, BioWare, and Nexon will be at VGXPO as well.
That's one thing that you can almost always guarantee as a female running around in the skimpy starter outfits in Warhammer Online -- you'll attract attention wherever you go. Of course, on the flip side, most of the time you don't necessarily attract it in quite as spectacular a manner as Snacky appears to have. Not sure what we mean? Here's Snacky from the Volkmar server with the details: My Shadow Warrior was exploring for some Tome unlocks and I found this group of Magi. They seemed quite pleased to meet me! It could also be that they're quite jealous of the outfit, as theyr'e stuck in what looks like Warhammer Online's version of choir robes.
Have you managed to aggro a group of mobs in a rather spectacular fashion? Perhaps you found a new and interesting location that you haven't seen posted here yet? Whatever your game, whatever your reason, we'd love to see your screenshots! Just send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name/server/guild and a quick description of the action. We'll post them in our gallery for everyone to enjoy and give you the credit.
With the addition of the new region-wide and RvR-wide chat channels we have seen a marked increase in Open RvR participation. In order to encourage this trend even further, we have made an additional adjustment to the experience awarded for killing enemy players in an Open RvR area. Previously we increased this amount by 50%. As of today, that bonus has been raised to 100%. With this change players killed in Open RvR will now be worth double the experience than those killed in scenarios!
As always, we will continue to monitor your feedback and work on ways to improve the RvR experience. More changes are coming, so be sure to stay tuned to the Warhammer Online Herald and monthly newsletter for the latest updates.
See you on the battlefield!
Now this is some good stuff. Now increase the XP from keeps!
yay!! now get the message out that Open RvR is worth more then Tor Anroc.
OK, can I just say - I LOVE that your heart is in the right place. But multiplying the XP you get in RvR does not matter when you have diminishing returns code that reduces your XP to 1 point per player! At a typical keep defense / attack, you may kill the same player 10, 20 even 50 times. After the first one or two times, you get jack.
So.. originally I got 1 point for each player I killed at a keep siege. Then, you put in a bonus and I got 1.5 points, which rounded up to 2. Now I get 2. See how this makes no difference to me?
I love the game and I think you guys are doing a fine job. But this particular series of changes shows that you are a little bit out-of-touch on this subject. For someone who plays RvR regularly, it just seems a little bizarre.
agreed.
ease off the Diminishing returns a little bit perhaps, so its less severe.
I'm glad for this change and I really hope it helps, although, there's still a problem.
There was the problem of having people always in scenarios and not in ORvR. This fix will help this.
There was also the problem of people being in only 1 scenario per tier. This may hurt this further.
Overall, I'm happy for the change, but there is a counterbalance to it
That's a good post. From a lore point of view I would say one should get a ton of experience for participating in a keep seige. I mean these are the things bards sing songs about. Perhaps have a radius around a keep where no diminishing returns occur. Make it a buff automatically applied to those entering the area, like the regular RvR zones do with Glory.
They need to add a bit of XP for taking BO, just a bit, about a 1/3 of a winning scenario imho, since it is a PQ it would be easy
then they need to triple the XP for taking a keep, and add some xp/rp for attacking/defending a keep to encourage you to actually fight the enemy instead of trying to PvE keeps
But this is a very good start to getting people out of scenarios and into the RvR lakes
Agreeing with this. Also - does this apply to renown points at all? There should also be greater incentives for the players to be in RvR lakes even when there are no opponents (up the XP/renown points for capturing objectives and keeps, fix the keep lord public quest loot to perhaps include participation tokens of some sort so it's less pointless, introduce repeatable quests (scouting, PvE and similar) in RvR lakes, perhaps even public quests...). If there are people doing things in the RvR lakes, the other side will try to stop them and vice versa.
This will be a nice bonus for the players who engage in actual PvP combat (if the diminishing returns are reduced), but it doesn't do much to get enough players to be in RvR lakes to do that in the first place.
netting BO should give a realm wide reward or something.
maybe give 500xp a minute or something like that then goes higher depending on how long you control that area. ( maybe 500xp is too high)
example if you control both BO on that zone it would give +25xp every minute after an hour it gives +30xp. the more BO you earn the more XP for your realm. then the other side have the reason to take it and you have a reason to defend it. You would only get that bonus XP if you are in an RvR Lake of that tier.
maybe xp as a reward is too much but something like it that would encourage players to take/defend them.
A 100% increase in is just more ,
Sorry but it doesn't come close to the guaranteed 30k xps grinding scenarios unfortunately
Why not go really out there and make it x5 or x10 - make it glaringly obvious that Open RvR will be extremely rewarding ,
Sometimes baby steps can take too long
I agree.
1. This XP increase is highly welcome.
2. But the diminishing returns are so severe that they pretty much rendering this change useless pretty quick.
Like someone else said. If I get 1XP or 2XP. Doesn't really make any difference.
3. Now the renown XP that needs to be upped a bit with Keep defending / Sieging and around Battlefield Objectives.
But again, like others already said. The dimishing returns are way too severe at the moment.
Another round of hot fixes coming your way courtesy of the dev team!

That's what I'm talkin' about, Mythic! I'm happy for the Squig Herders. It's great to see these class-specific bugs finally being addressed!
Let me beat everyone else and say that we all know that your CTDs have increased 3x after this hotfix.
Great work, really, but can we have the turret sound fix on EU servers? Plz...
I will enjoy actually using this ability for the first time since it was added to the game in beta. I am curious to see how it works out, since it has never once been usable.
Hooray for possibly making the spiked squig useful!
Ya, and the cloak fix was never fixed as well as the chat location fix was also never fixed. I might be only one but still nto working for me and apparently that was fixed couple weeks ago
MY GAME CRASHES 10x MORE NOW THANKS FOR THE HOTFIX
Well, they might need to reapply previous hotfixes to fix the already fixed issues that weren't fixed :P
Hopefully 1.1 will include the 'full' fixes for these issues, because the chat box location/unlock issue is REALLY annoying, even with a large game window to play with. Personally I think the chatbox as a whole is too huge, and needs to be made much slimmer. Just a window with small tabs and text entry that can be set at the top of the window.
Move that 3-head icon somewhere else, and along with it take the 'Open Groups' icon off my damn Profile UI and add them as icons attached to the map or something.
The content team works their butts off every patch. Are the problems the other dev teams are working in much more complex for not fixing more?
3 patches ago Witch Hunters trial by pain got a buff (shoot on the run) in the patch notes... It took 2 other patches for it to actually show up.
Now the buff is gone again... With no patch notes about the change.
This is very sloppy at best. Lots of credit for the smoothe release but these patches and patch notes are getting sloppy. I rather you take the time to get it right and get the notes complete before cranking out these hotfixes...
Trial by Pain is just one example... a lot of us are getting really confused we don't know what is an intential undocumented change and what is bug.. it's very unsettling.
If you, like many console owners, were wondering where the heck a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 version of Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO were hiding, you're not alone.
The good news is LucasArts and BioWare are "considering" bringing the MMO experience to consoles, which indirectly means the recently unveiled Star Wars title.
The bad news is the "confirmation" of console MMOs was just a blanket statement from Electronic Arts exec Frank Gibeau about future console MMO considerations (Note: EA owns BioWare).
"We're definitely looking at the opportunity to bring the MMO experience to console, without question," he said in an interview with Eurogamer. "We've got this product, and we've got Warhammer at play. So we're trying to look at the primary research required to understand how would you deploy it, what the client size looks like, how big is the back-end, what the play experience looks like... Once we've got some of those questions answered, we'll be able to decide which is the right play to go after."
When Gibeau was pressed further about Star Wars and Warhammer making an appearance on consoles, he said both titles were "under consideration." He offered no further details or confirmation beyond that, however.
As reported by GamePro, no release date was given for Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Most people playing Destruction who have wandered into the Inevitable City can relate to today's Warhammer Online screenshot. After all, it's not every day that you're presented with a huge castle surrounded by an awesome light show. This screenshot came in to us from Brevia, who thought we'd enjoy seeing Rurg on his first trip there. Brevia writes: Rurg is the guild leader of the Azazel destruction guild Genocidal Tendencies. Here we find Rurg getting his first view of the eternal citadel in Inevitable City. You can't see Rurg's face, but trust me it's full of shock and awe at the wondrous and powerful site before him.
If you've found an awe-inspiring area in your favorite game, we want to see it! Just send it to us here at oneshots At massively DOT com along with your name/server/guild and a quick description. We'll post it out here for all the Massively readers to see and give you the credit. (Besides, it's pretty cool to see your own screenshot up here, we think.)
Yesterday a new Warhammer Online hot fix went out to the live servers that dealt with several content bugs ranging from PvE, RvR to an item fix. The biggest change was probably with The Oathbearer Warbringers, which are now rewarding players for finishing the repeatable Doomfist Crater quests. Also, the Oathbearers now offer the quests to anyone at least rank 18. The item fix simply stops a helmet from appearing for a range of careers that it wasn't supposed to be showing up for at all. So if you've been trying fruitlessly to wear a War Calling Casque Helmet, you might want to check again and see if you're even able to wear the thing.
